How To Write A Great Blog

A lot of people think blog writing is easy, and it is – if you take a few basic steps first. Too many people start their blogs without the right kind of planning, and without much experience in writing. The end result is a confusing blog without a real sense of what it is, or a blog that gets abandoned halfway through. If you want to know how to write a blog without getting lost or having trouble updating, here are a few tips to help you.

Writing a Blog – focus

  • Make sure you have a focus. Lots of people start blog writing without knowing exactly what they’re blogging about.
  • Don’t get distracted by another subject.
  • While it’s okay to go off topic a little – lots of cooking blogs talk
about family and travel, and lots of writing blogs talk about day to
day life – don’t let those extras take over.

Soon, their blogs are a mess of intermingled topics and visitors don’t really know what they’re looking at.  Otherwise, you could find yourself with a blog that doesn’t really go anywhere.

Writing a Blog – know your audience

Know your audience. If you’re writing a particular type of blog, there are good odds that you have a specific audience you’re talking to. They might be a lot like you, but maybe they’re not. Make sure you keep your audience in mind whenever you decide to write. Knowing how to write a blog on technical topics for an audience that’s not quite as tech savvy as you are is harder than it sounds. You’ll have to be willing to explain everything carefully, but without making your readers feel like you don’t think much of them. Writing to your audience is extremely important.

Writing a Blog – take your time

Take your time. In this age of quick communication, a lot of us are tempted to use shortcuts, write in a stream of consciousness style, and skip out on the editing. The result is blog writing that doesn’t look like you care. Take the time to edit, spellcheck, and look over all your blog entries before you post. If you have trouble with writing or spelling, take extra time. It’s worth it to look like you’re a careful person who knows what they’re talking about.

Mind what you say. It’s important to remember that what you put down in writing on the Internet is awfully hard to take back. So if you’re in the middle of blog writing and decide to rant about work, or a particular person, you could be setting yourself up for trouble. Most information on the Internet doesn’t go away, though it can be forgotten. Never forget that someone might dig up your embarrassing old blog posts from an archive, even if you’ve deleted them. Think carefully before you speak, and you’ll know how to write a blog that won’t embarrass you or your business.
