Google Adwords goes Mobile

Claire Taylor - Thursday, April 01, 2010
Claire talking about Google Adwords for mobileGoogle has announced Adwords for mobile.  An app that allows you to access your Adwords account from your Smartphone.  With more and more of us relying on mobile devices to manage pretty much everything in our day to day lives, this can only be a good thing.

This will allow those of us who have Google Adwords accounts to manage all of our accounts on the go, multiple changes can be made to a number of functions.  Google say "We built AdWords for mobile to help you quickly access the essentials in your account, so we’ve focused on letting you view and make basic edits to campaigns and keywords through the mobile application. If you need access to the other parts of your account, like ads or campaign settings, you can switch to the desktop version of AdWords through a link at the bottom of the screen."

For those of us who use Google AdWords on a regular basis this allows easy access and allows quick changes to be made with an easy to use interface.  Mobile is becoming increasingly important to internet marketing, not only with functionality like this, but also in terms of how we organise and manage our day, how we access information on the internet and how we communicate with each other.  More and more reliance is being placed on mobile devices and this new move by Google Adwords  is a welcome addition to the Google Toolkit.

To find out more take a look at the Google Adwords Blog

Wouldn't it be great if Google could follow this with a similar App for analytics?

Running an Effective Adwords Campaign

Claire Taylor - Thursday, November 26, 2009

Many companies appreciate the need for paid advertising, but many embark on a campaign, fail to receive any return on investment and promptly give up.  But it does work and it can be a very profitable way of marketing your business.  Let me outline some of the benefits:

Measurement

Google Adwords gives you the ability to track your campaign in detail.  you can see what works and what doesn't work so well and make the necessary adjustments.

Budget

You control the budget yourself, you cannot overspend and you can decide how much you are willing to pay for each click you get.

Flexibility

You can advertise across different networks, locations and have different campaigns running to suit different strategies.

Adaptable

You can adapt your campaigns to market to different audiences.

My top ten tips:

  1. Make you adverts as highly targeted as possible, the more specific you can be the higher the conversion rate.
  2. Think about when your ad's are displayed, when is your target market most likely to be online. e.g. if your phone lines stop at 8pm why would you want to be encouraging people to call you at 2am?
  3. Do you have a product that would work with PPC, e.g. if your items all sell for £1.00 and your click cost is 50 pence, then Adwords probably isn't going to work for you.
  4. Work on increasing your Google quality score, you can get higher placements for lower click costs.
  5. Make sure that your click-through's go to a page relevant to the advert, there is nothing more frustrating than clicking on an add for red shoes and getting through to the sites home page.
  6. Make sure you accurately represent yourself in the ad, if you say you are offering a 20% discount, make sure this is visible on the page you send the click-through to.
  7. Do not advertise for items that are out of stock, you are wasting your money and you will make people less likely to visit your site again.
  8. In your ad text, try to concentrate on the benefits for the consumer rather than how fantastic you are as a business.
  9. Make sure you are happy with your maximum click costs, remember it is not always best to pay for number one positioning, it may be that being ranked number three works out better for your business.
  10. Try out a few different adverts to work out what gets the best click through rate and keep doing this, the market changes very quickly and you need to adapt your campaign on a continuous basis to ensure you are getting the best return on investment that you can.
